Unlike traditional machining, Swiss lathes feed material through a guide bushing that supports the workpiece exactly where pressure is being applied. This technique results in several advantages, namely, parts with low length to diameter ratios can be held to extremely tight tolerances, regardless of part length. Additionally, multiple operations can occur simultaneously with the use of live tooling and the sub-spindle, which “picks up” the back side of the part. Finally, when paired with an automatic bar feeder, material handling time is almost eliminated resulting in near perfect efficiency while maintaining top tier precision.
