What Is Centerless Grinding?
Centerless grinding is a machining process used to produce precise cylindrical parts without the need to mount the workpiece between centers. Instead, the part is supported by a work rest blade and positioned between a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel. This method allows for rapid material removal, excellent roundness, and tight dimensional control — making it an efficient and economical choice for cylindrical components with consistent outside diameters.
Infeed & Thrufeed Grinding
Infeed Grinding
Infeed grinding is ideal for parts with complex profiles, shoulders, or multiple diameters. The workpiece is placed between the grinding and regulating wheels and ground to size in a single plunge. This method provides excellent control over part geometry and is well-suited for low to medium volume runs.
Thrufeed Grinding
Thrufeed grinding is the most efficient method for parts with a simple, consistent cylindrical shape. Parts are fed continuously between the grinding and regulating wheels, entering one side and exiting the other. While more setup-intensive, thrufeed grinding significantly reduces part handling time, making it the cost-effective choice for longer production runs.
